My First Night Shift On Duty

First Night Shift On Duty: It was in December 1966 and I had just been posted to 3 (F) Wing Zweibrucken. I was all of 17 and had been introduced to Flight Sergeant Dave Dyke who I was going to be working for starting this particular evening. I reported for duty and met all 18 crew members ... yes 18...!! The boss was F/S Dyke, SGT Ollie Funk and a whole bunch of Corporals Ed Gardiner, Bob Altwater, Danny Schurman, Harvey Varrin, Al MacAusland and more. Well as the evening progressed the work got done, I watched the old vets play snooker and was getting tired. During my tour of the Fire Hall I noticed the dormitory upstairs and so I asked the guy next to me in the lounge ... Al MacAusland "when are we allowed to go to bed?" Al replied "oh anytime now" he said ... "just grab the last bunk over on the left side by the window" Well I did just that and thought to myself ... wow just like home the bunk was all made up! I crawled into the bunk and was rudely awakened a couple of hours later by a big guy with a bigger stogie in his mouth...yelling at me for being in his bunk. Geez did I ever move fast out of there! I found out later that I had been set up by Al as was the tradition on the crew when a rookie showed up. Everyone had a great laugh at my expense. But, I will never forget Bob Altwater standing there over me with that big stinky cigar yelling for me to get out of his bunk...
