1945 RCAF Station, Uplands, Ontario No. 2 SFTS

Fire Hall Burns - One night we received a call from Station Rockcliffe requesting our help as their fire hall was burning. The Orderly Officer would not permit us to leave Uplands without fire protection. The Ottawa morning paper headlines read “RCAF STATION ROCKCLIFFE FIRE HALL BURNS”.  All that was left was the Welcome Matt outside the front door. The two fire vehicles that were housed in the fire hall were lost. The fire crew had to escape through the dormitory windows. A Board Of Inquiry later established that someone had left the iron plugged in before they went to bed. As a result of that incident, it was necessary for one firefighter to remain awake at night.
