Fire
Drill Confusion - The CFM decided to have a test alarm at one of the Storage
Sites where most of the crew was comprised of Fire Pickets. This fire alarm from
a response point of view was right on. On arrival the Fire Picket jumped off
with the hose to catch the hydrant. The Picket wrapped the hose around a
telephone pole and the truck proceeded to the location. The hose line was broken
and the nozzle installed all in good time. The Fire Chief called for water and
waited and waited but no water came down the line. On his inspection of the line
layout he found that the hydrant man had wrapped the hose around the telephone
pole, as previously mentioned, and he had insufficient hose available to run
back to the hydrant 20 to 30 feet away. It appears that in the training of the
Fire Picket on hose lays etc that a telephone pole was frequently used as it was
easier to catch than a hydrant. I would imagine training procedures were changed
in very short order.
